The demolition of two tower blocks and the old Huddersfield sports centre will begin later this month.
We have appointed Rotherham-based Demex Ltd to carry out the work.
The work is expected to be completed in autumn.
No decision has been made on a final use for the Southgate site. Councillors in the cabinet will consider proposals for the site once it is clear later this year.
The site includes the sports centre, the Ibbotson and Lonsbrough flats, Pine Street car park, our former computer centre and some empty commercial units.
The draft local plan proposes that the site is allocated for mixed use development.
Councillor’s thoughts on the old sports centre
Cllr Peter McBride, Cabinet member for Place, said:
“This is the next significant step in the regeneration of the town centre. The new sports centre has been open for almost a year now, the flats were replaced by Harold Wilson Court in 2014, and we are ready to move ahead with creating an exciting future use for this key gateway to Huddersfield centre.”
